    Mixing the reactive with the personal: Opportunities for end-user programming in personal information management

    The transition of personal information management (PIM) tools off the desktop to the Web presents an opportunity to augment these tools with capabilities provided by the wealth of real-time information readily available. In this chapter, we describe a personal information assistance engine that lets end-users delegate to it various simple context- and activity-reactive tasks and reminders. Our system, Atomate, treats RSS/ATOM feeds from social networking and life-tracking sites as sensor streams, integrating information from such feeds into a simple unified RDF world model representing people, places and things and their time-varying states and activities. Combined with other information sources on the web, including the user's online calendar, web-based e-mail client, news feeds and messaging services, Atomate can be made to automatically carry out a variety of simple tasks for the user, ranging from context-aware filtering and messaging, to sharing and social coordination actions. Atomate's open architecture and world model easily accommodate new information sources and actions via the addition of feeds and web services. To make routine use of the system easy for non-programmers, Atomate provides a constrained-input natural language interface (CNLI) for behavior specification, and a direct-manipulation interface for inspecting and updating its world model

    Wall Crossing from Dirac Zeromodes

    We explore the physics of two-body decay of BPS states using semiclassical analysis to construct explicit solutions that illustrate the main features of wall crossing, for both ordinary and framed BPS states. In particular we recover the primitive wall-crossing formula from an asymptotic analysis of certain Dirac-type operators on monopole moduli spaces. Along the way we give an asymptotic metric for the moduli space of singular monopoles, analogous to the Gibbons-Manton and Lee-Weinberg-Yi metrics for the moduli space of smooth monopoles, and we find evidence for the existence of stable non-BPS boundstates.     An exploratory randomised controlled trial of a premises-level intervention to reduce alcohol-related harm including violence in the United Kingdom

    <b>Background</b><p></p> To assess the feasibility of a randomised controlled trial of a licensed premises intervention to reduce severe intoxication and disorder; to establish effect sizes and identify appropriate approaches to the development and maintenance of a rigorous research design and intervention implementation.<p></p> <b>Methods</b><p></p> An exploratory two-armed parallel randomised controlled trial with a nested process evaluation. An audit of risk factors and a tailored action plan for high risk premises, with three month follow up audit and feedback. Thirty-two premises that had experienced at least one assault in the year prior to the intervention were recruited, match paired and randomly allocated to control or intervention group. Police violence data and data from a street survey of study premises’ customers, including measures of breath alcohol concentration and surveyor rated customer intoxication, were used to assess effect sizes for a future definitive trial. A nested process evaluation explored implementation barriers and the fidelity of the intervention with key stakeholders and senior staff in intervention premises using semi-structured interviews.<p></p> <b>Results</b><p></p> The process evaluation indicated implementation barriers and low fidelity, with a reluctance to implement the intervention and to submit to a formal risk audit. Power calculations suggest the intervention effect on violence and subjective intoxication would be raised to significance with a study size of 517 premises.<p></p> <b>Conclusions</b><p></p> It is methodologically feasible to conduct randomised controlled trials where licensed premises are the unit of allocation. However, lack of enthusiasm in senior premises staff indicates the need for intervention enforcement, rather than voluntary agreements, and on-going strategies to promote sustainability

    Assessment of hemodynamic indices of conjunctival microvascular function in patients with coronary microvascular dysfunction

    Objective: Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is a cause of ischaemia with non-obstructive coronary arteries (INOCA). It is notoriously underdiagnosed due to the need for invasive microvascular function testing. We hypothesized that systemic microvascular dysfunction could be demonstrated non-invasively in the microcirculation of the bulbar conjunctiva in patients with CMD. Methods: Patients undergoing coronary angiography for the investigation of chest pain or dyspnoea, with physiologically insignificant epicardial disease (fractional flow reserve ≥0.80) were recruited. All patients underwent invasive coronary microvascular function testing. We compared a cohort of patients with evidence of CMD (IMR ≥25 or CFR &lt;2.0); to a group of controls (IMR &lt;25 and CFR ≥2.0). Conjunctival imaging was performed using a previously validated combination of a smartphone and slit-lamp biomicroscope. This technique allows measurement of vessel diameter and other indices of microvascular function by tracking erythrocyte motion. Results: A total of 111 patients were included (43 CMD and 68 controls). There were no differences in baseline demographics, co-morbidities or epicardial coronary disease severity. The mean number of vessel segments analysed per patient was 21.0 ± 12.8 (3.2 ± 3.5 arterioles and 14.8 ± 10.8 venules). In the CMD cohort, significant reductions were observed in axial/cross-sectional velocity, blood flow, wall shear rate and stress. Conclusion: The changes in microvascular function linked to CMD can be observed non-invasively in the bulbar conjunctiva. Conjunctival vascular imaging may have utility as a non-invasive tool to both diagnose CMD and augment conventional cardiovascular risk assessment.</p

    The reduction of intoxication and disorder in premises licensed to serve alcohol: An exploratory randomised controlled trial

    Background: Licensed premises offer a valuable point of intervention to reduce alcohol-related harm. Objective: To describe the research design for an exploratory trial examining the feasibility and acceptability of a premises-level intervention designed to reduce severe intoxication and related disorder. The study also aims to assess the feasibility of a potential future large scale effectiveness trial and provide information on key trial design parameters including inclusion criteria, premises recruitment methods, strategies to implement the intervention and trial design, outcome measures, data collection methods and intra-cluster correlations. Design: A randomised controlled trial in licensed premises that had experienced at least one assault in the year preceding the intervention, documented in police or hospital Emergency Department (ED) records. Premises were recruited from four study areas by piloting four recruitment strategies of varying intensity. Thirty two licensed premises were grouped into matched pairs to reduce potential bias and randomly allocated to the control or intervention condition. The study included a nested process evaluation to provide information on intervention acceptability and implementation. Outcome measures included police-recorded violent incidents, assault-related attendances at each premises &rsquo; local ED and patron Breath Alcohol Concentration assessed on exiting and entering study premises. Results: The most successful recruitment method involved local police licensing officers and yielded a 100% success rate. Police-records of violence provided the most appropriate source of data about disorder at the premises level. Conclusion: The methodology of an exploratory trial is presented and despite challenges presented by the study environment it is argued an exploratory trial is warranted. Initial investigations in recruitment methods suggest that study premises should be recruited with the assistance of police officers. Police data were of sufficient quality to identify disorder and street surveys are a feasible method for measuring intoxication at the individual level.     A photo- and electrochemically-active porphyrin–fullerene dyad electropolymer

    A hole- and electron-conducting polymer has been prepared by electropolymerization of aporphyrin–fullerene monomer. The porphyrin units are linked by aminophenyl groups to form a linear chain in which the porphyrin is an integral part of the polymer backbone. The absorption spectrum of a film formed on indium-tin-oxide-coated glass resembles that of a model porphyrin–fullerene dyad, but with significant peak broadening. The film demonstrates a first oxidation potential of 0.75 V vs. SCE, corresponding to oxidation of the porphyrin polymer, and a first reduction potential of -0.63 V vs. SCE, corresponding to fullerene reduction. Time-resolved fluorescence studies show that the porphyrin first excited singlet state is strongly quenched by photoinduced electron transfer to fullerene. Transient absorption investigations reveal that excitation generates mobile charge carriers that recombine by both geminate and nongeminate pathways over a large range of time scales. Similar studies on a related polymer that lacks the fullerene component show complex, laser-intensity-dependent photoinduced electron transfer behavior. The properties of the porphyrin–fullerene electropolymer suggest that it maybe useful in organic photovoltaic applications, wherein light absorption leads to charge separationwithin picoseconds in a “molecular heterojunction” with no requirement for exciton migration.Fil: Gervaldo, Miguel Andres.
